Awesome kit for the price.
I purchased the meter to keep check of my blood glucose, started a new diet to manage type 2. The kit arrived well packaged and with an abundant amount of test strips and needles. I did not set my meter up, I just wrote my numbers down on the log sheet supplied with the kit. I think the voice that reads out the levels and the auto shut off when the test strip is removed is a value in itself. Now here is the stumbling block, how accurate is it? I have had one extremely high reading, it could have been accurate or not, I did not recheck, I just accepted it and went on from there. If your blood glucose or type 2 is at the critical level where your health/life depends on accurate numbers, splurge for a meter suggested by your doctor. Otherwise it is a great starter kit and simple to use.

Seemingly good, inexpensive meter – no idea about accuracy
I had some concerns about blood sugar, and wanted to get a good, inexpensive meter to track my blood sugar when I wake up, before and after I eat, at bedtime, and at other times when the idea of testing hits me.To do this, I wanted a good supply of strips that I can burn through before satisfying myself that a) I had an issue with my blood glucose or b) I didn’t.Setting this meter up was very easy, and very intuitive. I really didn’t need the quick start guide or the manual.(For testers who have questions about accuracy, remember that instructions say you should wipe off the first drop of blood before putting blood onto the strip – this may improve accuracy).Although the voice can be turned off, I appreciated it at low volume, and the subtle updates that it spoke – especially ‘apply blood to strip’ and then the readout of the value. At this point, I sometimes remove the strip before the meter announces the reading – and then listen to the ‘goodbye.’ The display is large and easy to read, so I can skip the voice announcement.OTOH – if I was visually challenged, having the audio would make this an extremely valuable and easy to use meter.I was initially amazed by how I didn’t feel the lancet prick my finger (although I occasionally do). In the 8 or 9 tests that I’ve run with the meter, I only had one test fail because my fingers were cold and I couldn’t get a large enough microdrop of blood for testing.I was also pleased by how small this meter is.Because I wasn’t able to test accuracy against any other resource (a recent lab result or test on another, possibly inaccurate meter), I couldn’t rate its accuracy. When you go to the company’s website, there’s a link to download management software – and you can download test results by connecting a mini-usb plug to the meter, and the other end to a computer. Not being diabetic (according to the meter) (thank god), I downloaded the software but didn’t log into the company’s server, but it’s nice to know that there’s software to help manage testing.I don’t regret paying the small amount for the meter and 100 strips.

Great Kit
Decided to buy a new meter to replace the one my insurance gave me back in 2012. The biggest pro is that this meter uses commonly found AAA batteries instead of the sometimes more difficult to find “button” batteries, and are going to be easier to change if you have a tough time with your hands. (Not there yet but I know it’s coming). The talking feature is handy but the number display is big enough that you should be able to see it without glasses. Unless of course, if you really have some serious eye trouble.Supplies seem pretty available locally, so Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s and, CVS should have what you need if you get caught out in the field without. Pricing is better here however, if you can wait. Plugs into the computer using a standard USB charging type cable and with software you can download from Prodigy, will give you daily, weekly and, monthly averages that can be printed or exported to a program like Excel or Calc, where you can create some serious charts for your doctor if you want. (Or if you are just a big nerd like me 😀 ).The only con is the lancet device. But I am spoiled by my Accu-Check FastClix device. It has cartridges that load 6 lancets for use, so I only have to fool with it once every 2-3 days. As opposed to this lancet device, which must be loaded every time. So I keep that as a backup. But you can’t have everything. (I can’t back that up). So 5 stars all the way! Happy days and health all!

Works well
After reading many reviews and pondering my options, I purchased this monitor to replace a now-obsolete AlphaTrak II monitor which I used for my diabetic cat. Some veterinarians insist on a feline/canine specific monitor which costs more to purchase including the necessary supplies. However, the feline diabetes sites advocate using “human” monitors as a cat’s “normal” blood sugar range is similar to a human’s. I bought this Prodigy monitor before running out of the AlphaTrak supplies and compared the results of each. This monitor is spot on 😮, and the monitor and supplies cost much less than AlphaTrak. It is easy to use, and I would recommend it.
