My octogenarian mother is an extremely health-conscious and active woman who, because of her youthful appearance, many people still think is barely in her ’60s and doesn’t need to take any medications and hasn’t need a doctor in ages. This past month, however, showed us both just how quickly such a things can change at that age after a very unfortunately combination of caffeinated coffee and herbal tea lead to a near-death experience and several days where I stayed with her 24-hours because we knew that, if things didn’t get better, she’d have to go to the ER. The liquid combination lead to a serious attack on her central nervous system, preventing her from being able to eat or sleep for several days, leading to several falls, and also triggering shingles. In brainstorming what a hospital would do if someone couldn’t eat solids, she started to describe what I immediately recognized as Ensure. I went to the closest store, found some, and got it for her to try out. Thankfully, that was exactly the type of thing she needed. Ensure is just packed with critical nutrients including nutrients that even a very health-conscious person doesn’t even think about needing. So, it didn’t take long before those nutrients starting doing their job; getting her back into a mental and physical state where it was safe for her to be left alone for periods of time again. A month later, it has proven so successful that we both agree she’s even more mentally alert and coherent than she was before getting sick and she decided to add it as part of her regular, on-going diet going forward. That’s why, after picking up individual 6-packs here and there this past month, it was finally time to pick up a 24-pack case like this. And, because the focus is now on her getting more physical stamina and putting weight back on that she’s lost, we switched to Ensure Plus that still has the thorough nutrients and high Protein content but has 350 calories instead of just 160 like Ensure High Protein had. Before this incident, I had actually tried Ensure Plus myself for a little while and already knew that there are a lot of different varieties aimed at different situations … including options for maintaining weight, losing weight, or gaining weight. The taste of the chocolate variety is something that both Mom and I could enjoy though this dark chocolate flavor will be even better for her. Instead of likening it to Chocolate Milk, it is more like a Chocolate Milkshake that’s almost fully melted. It feels more solid than plain milk but is still smooth like melted ice cream would be. I was very glad that, having tried it myself and therefore already being familiar with it myself, when Mom started to describe it, I did know exactly what she was talking about. But, the fact someone like myself would be aware of Ensure is a sign of how well-known it is. While I didn’t personally see any changes or benefits from taking it myself, for Mom’s case where it really was having to be a replacement for a solid meal, the changes and benefits couldn’t have been more obvious. It is healthy. The nutrients it provides has real impact. And, even a person heavily focused on making sure everything they consume is good for them, may find these Ensure shakes filling in nutrient gaps they weren’t aware of. It’s always nice to buy something and to feel confident afterwards that it worked. That it did exactly what it claimed it would do. Even better when you see a loved-ones rapidly declining health take an important U-turn for the better because a product like Ensure proves why it’s so well-known and that its reputation is well-earned.
